Root canal treatment is a routine dental procedure needed when the blood or nerve supply of a tooth (Pulp) is infected due to tooth decay or due to any injury.
Decay of the teeth if left untreated, gradually progress and involve the pulp of the tooth giving rise to dental pain. If left untreated the infection may spread through the root canal system leading to an abscess and maybe an extraction. Root canal treatment not only removes the infection from the tooth but also saves the tooth structure. Root canal treatment is basically nothing but just removal of infected soft tissue within the tooth and its replacement by an artificial inert filling material.
A crown (cap) is advised on the root canal treated tooth to protect it and restore it to its full function.
The dental infection contained in the pulp is eliminated by means of mechanical and chemical means. This serves as to prevent the tooth from future dental treatment. Later the empty canals are filled with an inert filling. As the tooth becomes week after this procedure, it is highly recommended that such a tooth get a dental crown.
Previously RCT were performed in 2 or 3 visits, but Now due to advance in technology machine delivered rotary endo motors, which have drastically reduced RCT treatment time, and also Single visit RCT is possible with the help of high end equipment like Rotary Endo machines, LASERS and Apex locators.
So there is nothing to worry about Root canal treatments now.
